The challenge of massive digitalization in public transport

The overall transport volume in Europe increases year by year introduced by a growing and more mobile population. Especially the peaks of capacity utilization of the infrastructure in rush hours is a challenge – which shall be addressed with more digitalization and process optimization; and not only with an additional expansion of the rail infrastructure.

The implementation faces its challenges:

• Heterogenous requirements – small volumes
• Non-standardized vehicle architectures
• Massive approval effort for hardware and software

The resulting time-to-market, the costs and the current effort for maintenance (e.g. software updates) is not at eye level comparing with other industries (e.g. the automation industry). The ITxPT initiative wants to counteract this.

Competitive through compliance

A centralized communication architecture, based on industry-standardized protocols, is a major requirement to introduce the digitalization within reasonable costs and time-to-market. The ITxPT organization enables interoperability between IT systems in Public Transport by specifying an IP based onboard communication infrastructure.
