A redundant and thus highly reliable network connection is essential for many applications, for example for payment terminals at petrol stations or bus stops. If a connection is not stable, this can result in high financial losses. One technical solution is the so-called multihoming.
With multihoming, the connection to the Internet or to another network is not only established via one interface or one provider, but via at least two. Multihoming not only increases the reliability of the hardware, but also of the provider, as there is still at least one alternative connection.
Multihoming can also be used for load distribution in addition to increasing reliability. The technology can also save costs, because depending on the price, data traffic can be routed via the cheapest connection.
With the products of NetModule, multihoming can now be implemented with the use of only one router per network. The NB1800 series routers, with the necessary interfaces and comprehensive router software, serve as a robust all-in-one solution.
The NB1800 series routers are equipped with Gigabit Ethernet, optionally also with a 4-port Gigabit Ethernet switch with PoE +, as well as with LTE and WLAN IEEE 802.11 ac. In addition, they are equipped with a slot for SFP modules (Mini-GBIC), which allow for example fiber optics or another Gigabit Ethernet interface.
These different interfaces can be used as redundant as well as fallback interfaces for multihoming. All connections are monitored by the router software (Link Supervision) and can be secured with VPN. If an interface or a connection to a provider fails, it is possible to switch automatically to another one thanks to intelligent routing.
